HUSH!
Limited Edition Offer
This spring, I was honored to be one of six artists chosen from nearly 200 applicants for the prestigious Print and Paper Fellowship Award at the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions. I worked with Master Papermaker Anne Q. McKeown and her assistant Lisa Switalski.
Located at the Mason Gross School of Art at Rutgers University, the Brodsky Center has hosted collaborations with artists such as Kiki Smith, Richard Tuttle, Chakaia Booker, William Kentridge and Willie Brown.
Ten days up to our elbows in paper pulp produced this georgeous, limited-edition paperwork titled "Hush." Anne's process is labor-intensive but creates amazing results: First, the base sheet is "pulled" from a vat of abaca fiber that has been beaten to a parchment-like translucence. Each color is added to the wet base sheet by applying tinted cotton paper pulp via stencils and silk screens. (To create "Hush," the purple layer was applied first, and the pink and white were applied after the wet sheet was carefully turned over.)
